WIAA - Wolves runner headed to state competition

Like his big brother before him, Coupeville athlete Tyler King is laying trail as one of the fastest guys around.

Not only did he take first place at the WesCo Divisional Championships in Lakewood last month, but the 16-year-old Coupeville sophomore's performance at the 4A District championships in South Whidbey last weekend guaranteed him a chance to run against the state's best runners.

King's sixth-place finish makes him one of 15 runners from the district who will compete at the state championships in Pasco on Nov. 8.

"I'm happy with that," King said. "I'm going to state!"

While this won't be King's first time competing at the state championships, it could be his strongest showing yet. In 2007, King finished the 5,000-meter with a 17:40 time. That placed him 98th overall, which isn't bad for a first-time contender. But with his 16:16 finish in Lakewood two weeks ago, his competitors at state will likely be keeping a closer watch on him this year.
